Violin Parts

It is important that you know all the violin parts, because knowing them can effect how you learn to play. The parts of the violin cause, help, or change the sound of the music played with the violin. These parts are named just like the human body. A violin has a neck, back, ribs, and belly. The neck and belly is located at the front of the violin; back and ribs located at the back and the sides. There are more parts to the violin though, and those aren’t so easy to place.

One part of the violin is the scroll. The scroll is located at the top of the violin. This part is decorative and usually hand carved. This part doesn’t need to be changed or cleaned at all.

The bass bar is located beneath the front of the violin, distributes the sound of the violin along the belly, and passes the sound to the back of the violin. This part of the violin strengthens the body of the instrument.

The ribs are usually hand-carved or hand-decorated. A pegbox is where the pegs are inserted. The pegs are used to tune the violin by adjusting.

The nut is used to keep the distance of the strings and support them. By supporting them, it keeps the strings at a good height from the fingerboard. The violin has four strings that are a fifth apart.

The bridge is essential because it directly relates to the quality of sound the violin makes. The bridge is held in place by the four strings’ tension. When the strings vibrate, the bridge follows suit and also vibrates.

The fingerboard is a strip of wood on the neck of the violin. When the player of the violin is pressing down on the strings, he presses down on the fingerboard which ends up changing the pitch.

There are also sounding posts which are located under the bridge and they support the pressure of the inside of the violin. The bridge and sounding post are directly related, when the violin vibrates, so do the body, bridge, and sounding post.

F holes are located at the middle of the violin. There are called F holes because it looks like an F in italics. These holes allow the sound to come out of the violin. Altering the F holes can change the sound of the violin.

The Tailpiece holds the strings so that it is away form the bridge.

Finally there is the chin rest. The chin rest is there so that the violinist can rest his chin, which in turn, holds the violin in place while he is playing. By holding the violin with his chin, it makes his hands free for playing the music.

Most violin parts don’t need to be changed or cleaned. This makes handling easy and doesn’t take up your playing time. The parts of the violin that were listed can change, help, or make the music that comes out of the violin.
